Professional history

Tim is the Chairman of Wates Group, one of the UK’s largest privately owned construction property services and development businesses – operating nationally with 4,500 employees and revenues of over £1.7bn.

Tim started his career at Cazenove & Co. in the City prior to joining the Wates Group in 1993, where he has held a number of roles around finance and housing. He was appointed Deputy Chairman in October 2022 and became Chairman in May 2023.

Tim previously served as Chairman of the Wates Family Council, the Family Shareholder forum.  Tim is a Non-Executive Director of Tampopo (restaurants) and Pedder Property (estate agency). He is the proud holder of an MBA from Cambridge Judge Business School and serves on the Advisory Board.

Society & charity work

Tim is a Trustee/Patron of various Wates Family charities (including the William Wates Memorial Trust) and is a Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey. In March 2023 he was installed as High Sheriff of Surrey for a one-year term.

For 6 years he was Chairman of the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership, completing his 2 terms in July 2020, he was a Trustee Director of the Clink Charity from 2011 to April 2023, a Prime Minister’s UK Business Ambassador from 2012-2018 and a state school Governor from 2005-2015.

Outside work, he likes to spend time with his family and his Corgis, enjoys food and wine and plays a weekly game of indoor football.
