Saroj's Story
Life before Cambridge
Prior to Cambridge, I was in New York working with an ingenuous group of people at a brand licensing agency, Brandgenuity. People, and the reasons behind their choices, have always fascinated me because they can be varied, and yet consistent enough to form the solid foundation of a brand's equity. At Brandgenuity, we took this equity and successfully translated them into purchase drivers in new product categories for global brands such as MGM Studios, LeapFrog Enterprises, Atari and others.
Why Cambridge MBA
I enjoyed the Cambridge MBA because it offered me a chance to experience a dynamic and practical curriculum in a historic institution. I found myself in the midst of a very rich and diverse culture, with classmates from over 45 countries, across varying disciplines, which made for some fantastic stories and stimulating discussions.
One of the reasons I picked the Cambridge MBA was the opportunities it offered through the three practical projects; where else would you be able to consult with the hi-end luxury music system company in Cambridge one month, then work with the world's leading spirits company in London the other, and a few months later fly out to South Africa to pull together a strategic plan and implementation strategy for a non-profit organisation?
A future with the children's sector
The Leadership Seminars struck a chord with me and gave me the extra push to pursue my dreams. I always knew that I wanted to work in the kids sector, both in a job in the short term, and eventually as an entrepreneur. After graduation, I worked at The Walt Disney Company in the Consumer Products Division, managing the Boys' Toys Category for EMEA focusing on Marvel, and managing the LEGO European relationship. Two years ago, I wouldn't have thought that I would be responsible with the team for business strategies for globally known franchises such as Spider-Man, The Avengers, Cars, Toy Story or Disney Princess. Working at Disney was a fun, dynamic and an exceptional learning experience as I was able to jump fully into the workings of the toy industry.
Still, while at Disney, I decided that it was time to take a leap of faith, so I quit my job and I am now focusing on laying the foundation to start my own business within the wonderful world of infant and kids. Cambridge, with its entrepreneurial focus, has always been a great support for budding entrepreneurs, and I've taken advantage of this support system, even if just to reach out and bounce ideas off my old professors, who are happy to help and extend their support.
A manic yet magical time
You and your classmates each have a story to tell. Make sure you swap them. You are in Cambridge for a short time, and for what will be a very special time. Make the most of every minute there.
