Master the fundamentals of accounting

An award winning teacher at Cambridge Judge Business School has written a book called Short Introduction to Accounting that will help students apply accounting as a useable, everyday business tool

Dr Richard Barker

Dr Richard Barker decided to write the book as he felt that accounting was a widely important subject, although not widely understood, and that students were in need of something that would help them grasp the fundamentals.

Part of the Cambridge Short Introductions series, the book adopts an intuitive, informal approach to describe basic principles - what they are, why they exist and how they are used - to help students see the connections between different parts of accounting and the rest of the business world. It encourages students to engage with the material by using questions and worked examples to test knowledge and understanding as they read.

It includes:

  • The hows and whys of the fundamentals of accounting
  • How financial statements are put together and how accounting information is applied to business
  • A glossary of financial terms that provides a guide to the language of business

Dr Barker commented: "This book explores why knowledge of accounting is important and why it is perceived to be a difficult subject; this helps greatly in making the subject more accessible and in giving the reader confidence in their learning."

In 2011, Dr Barker won the Cambridge Judge Teaching Award, as well as the Teaching Prize at Oxford Saïd Business School, where he was a Visiting Professor.
