Learning Styles
Experiential learning is an important element of the programme: visiting the organisations and places that will put what you learn into context.
On the MPhil in Technology Policy you will examine national policies for science, technology and innovation, and consider the role of technology in both public and private spheres - whether in the service of broader national policy objectives, or corporate strategy.
Our courses emphasise innovative approaches including group work, virtual learning environments, and simulations which replicate real-world negotiations and past technology policy events such as cabinet negotiations.
Field Trips
Field trips to Parliament and the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology take place during Orientation in late September. You will also visit a major infrastructure facility - examples of facilities visited in the past include Heathrow Terminal 5, NATS Air Traffic Control, the Thames Barrier, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Cambridge Water Treatment Works, and Didcot Power Station. This past year we also held our fifth anniversary celebration on the terrace at the House of Lords.
Brussels
The annual Easter Term visit to Brussels will teach you about the impact of the European Union on technology policy. A visit to the European Commission includes an introduction to the activities of European institutions as well as meetings with various Commission officials. Previous Technology Policy students have met with Neil Kinnock, then Vice President of the European Commission, and other senior officials such as the Director General for Research.
Your visit to the European Parliament includes meetings with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) with an interest in technology policy issues. In addition to having met MEPs from every region of the UK and every major British political party, Technology Policy students have also had the chance to meet MEPs from across the EU, including a Green MEPs from Spain, Free Democrats from Germany, a past Foreign Minister of Portugal, Dutch Socialists and Hungarian Conservatives. The Brussels visit may also give you the opportunity to meet senior officials from NATO and major industrial federations headquartered in Brussels.
