Programme overview

The MPhil in Management provides an academically rigorous and professionally relevant programme for recent graduates with less than a year of work experience.

The core of the MPhil in Management is grounded in the latest advances in business and management theory and practice, and covers quantitative methods, accounting, organisational behaviour and analysis, and marketing (foundation); business economics, finance,  and strategy (consolidation), operations management and the Management Consulting Project (implementation). This is complemented by a range of electives aligned to potential careers in management.

MichaelmasTerm 1FOUNDATION
Induction
The programme starts with a series of lectures and activities designed to help new students hit the ground running in Cambridge and start to think creatively and work together on team projects straightaway.
Core courses (nine taken per year, including the Management Consulting Project)

The MPhil in Management core courses cover an extensive breadth of business and management disciplines and topics. Core courses are taught throughout the programme. They provide a solid grounding in the key areas of management.

Electives (two taken per year)

The MPhil in Management electives cover a wide range of topics, designed to allow students to tailor the course to their own interests. Elective courses are taught throughout the programme. The specialist nature of electives will enable you to present prospective employers with a portfolio of both general management and specialised knowledge, to position yourself for the career to which you aspire.

Creativity & Innovation modules

From ground-breaking business model innovation and start-ups to Nobel Prize-winning scientific discoveries, from University walls to Silicon Fen pods, Cambridge is a world-renowned hub for creativity and game-changing ideas. Bespoke modules and workshops are offered throughout the programme. They will help you embrace the importance and relevance of creativity and innovation in the 21st century workplace, and unleash your own business creativity.

Collaborative Leadership modules

Very few business and management roles nowadays are carried out in isolation. A series of bespoke Collaborative Leadership modules and workshops are offered throughout the programme. They will teach you how working together can set you apart in the role and career to which you aspire.

Mentoring scheme

In the first few weeks on the programme, you will be put in touch with an alumnus/a of the business school who will serve as your Mentor for the duration of the programme. Your Mentor will provide you with career and industry advice, and will meet with you at your mutual convenience at least twice during the academic year.

Management Consulting Project

The Management Consulting Project is a core course on the programme. It provides you with a unique opportunity to apply theory to the practice of management. It involves working in teams over several weeks to solve a business problem within a blue-chip organisation, following which you'll present your analysis and results in an oral presentation to your client organisation and to an invited audience.

Assessment

Each course carries the same weighting towards the final mark. A wide range of assessment strategies are used, including examination, assignments, case studies, presentations and coursework. All core courses (except the Management Consulting Project) are assessed primarily by an individual University examination, which may be complemented with other types of assessments among those mentioned above.
