The MPhil in Management Science & Operations (MSO) is an integral part of the route to a PhD for two of our PhD pathways: Operations Management and Marketing.
This research masters programme emphasises economic modelling and statistical analysis as the main methodological approaches. Applicants are required to have university-level knowledge of calculus and linear algebra, as provided by most economics and engineering degrees.
The programme offers foundational courses on markets and organisations as well as methodological courses on mathematical modelling, econometrics and experimentation. You also take research seminars, in which classical texts and contemporary journal articles are discussed. The combination of courses and seminars enables you to critically assess the current state of knowledge and formulate research projects that contribute to present academic debates by challenging conventional wisdom and advancing knowledge.
There are a number of scholarships available to MPhil in Management Science & Operations students, ranging from ESRC scholarships, University of Cambridge and College scholarships, to corporate research funding. Find out more
Continuation to the PhD is regulated through a PhD admissions process during the MPhil year, which includes an interview, and is subject to the student's performance on the MPhil programme.
The solid quantitative foundations that I developed in my first degree are an excellent preparation for an academic career in a business school. But doing research is very different from taking taught courses. You need to develop the right mindset and the right capacity and that is exactly what the MSO programme at Cambridge provides. For me, the stimulating and highly personalised learning experience of the MSO programme was an invaluable step in my transition on to a PhD here at Cambridge.
