Operations Subject Group
About the Group
The Operations group studies the design and management of value-enhancing systems and processes that lead to improved decision-making in both tactical and strategic aspects of an organisation. Faculty members are involved in research projects addressing a wide spectrum of management challenges anddraw from economics, mathematics, statistics, strategy and operations research, as well as psychology and sociology. The subject group has two areas of specialisation:
- Management Science, which provides and exercises analytical tools for managers
- Operations Management, which concerns the management of operations in both manufacturing and service sectors

All members of the group make editorial contributions to leading journals, including in the last five years the Journal of Operations Management, Management Science, Operations Research, Mathematics of Operations Research, Mathematical Programming (editor-in-chief of Series B) and MSOM Production and Operations Management.

Industry engagement
The research agenda of the group is stimulated by regular contacts with senior personnel of regional, national and international organisations such as Bank of China, British Airways, BP, Ernst & Young, Ofgem, Defra, Shell, UK Department for Transport, NICE and Cambridge University Hospitals.
The group also maintains long-standing collaborations with leading academics and cognate groups in the UK, Europe and across the Atlantic.
