Make your management fit for growth

Economic growth and job creation are closely linked to the success of companies with high growth potential in almost every economy, both developed and emerging. These organisations, however, struggle to be successful and grow; only the very few manage to turn themselves into growth companies with the potential to make a difference to their economy.

Two main reasons are typically cited for this struggle: one is a lack of access to capital, and the second is limited managerial skills to strategically lead a company as it becomes large and international. The two reasons are connected; smaller companies are often opaque to banks and investors (because they report less than very large companies), so the variability in managerial capabilities across companies causes risk for investors. This prompts them to be conservative in lending or investing.

Cambridge Judge Business School and Barclays are determined to support these potential growth champions in developing their management capabilities through the Barclays Scale Up UK Programme; which has been designed to help high growth potential companies develop their organisation’s managerial skills, setting them up to grow.

The Scale Up programme and the coach’s guidance really helped to define where our time should be spent. The growth plan we developed during the programme gave us structure and belief in what we needed and wanted to do. We have worked to efficiently execute the plan and as a result, in the past financial year, our company has grown not only in terms of employees, but also in terms of profits: we have more than doubled the number of employees, multiplied our revenues by 170 per cent and grown our net profit by 376 per cent. This growth has allowed us to start a large funded education and awareness programme, which will see 25,000 children aged 15-18 educated around the potential dangers of gambling over the next two academic years. Our projected profits over the coming financial year will allow us to open the EPIC Foundation – an initiative for social causes such as grassroots sports participation, prison initiatives and more pro-bono state school education sessions. The growth of our organisation has also led to the recent signing of a contract to work in the USA with elite sport, where we will be leading the way in education and awareness of the risks associated with gambling.
