YUM BUG is on a mission to change perceptions around insects as food in the West and take them mainstream. Their recipe kits make it easy to cook tasty insect meals at home with a range of delicious recipes and bug-based cooking ingredients.
Eaten by over two billion people in over 80% of countries, insects are an incredibly sustainable superfood with up to 70% protein, and having: more iron than spinach, more calcium than milk, more fibre than brown rice, more potassium than bananas, more vitamin B12 than red meat – all for 2,000 times less CO2 and 22,000 times less water than beef per kilogram of protein.
Co-founders Leo and Aaron started YUM BUG in 2018 as a passion project buying insects from pet food stores and shooting insect recipe videos out of their garage for fun. The team has now grown to seven people.
Leo’s background is in food branding and design having designed for several food brands on shelves in UK supermarkets.
Aaron brings the insect expertise as an entomologist, previously conducting research and managing the operations for commercial products for disease control at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
YUM BUG aims to create a more sustainable food system through introducing edible insects to the Western diet – doing business in a way that contributes towards social equity and environmental sustainability.
