Influential reports have called on the government to rethink its business support by targeting small firms that are most likely to generate new jobs. Blanket support for businesses is misguided – and the creation of better, rather than more, companies, should be the government’s strategy, according to the Finance, Innovation and Growth (Finnov) report. This three-year study by academics from seven European universities was aimed at assessing the link between financial services and the real economy.
