Financial Times: UK innovators: Ready to launch

 

Sarah Gordon investigates why UK is not very successful at innovation. “The UK leads the world in terms of research but if you look at the commercialisation of innovation, the UK lags behind,” says Hanadi Jabado, Director of Accelerate Cambridge at Cambridge Judge Business School. Jaideep Prabhu, Jawaharlal Nehru Professor of Indian Business & Enterprise at Cambridge Judge, has similar thoughts. So what could be done to tackle this problem? Michael Kitson, University Senior Lecturer in International Macroeconomics at Cambridge Judge, suggests to overlook immigration policies and to look at the diffusion of innovation. David Connell, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Business Research, argues that R&D should look for more effective forms of funding and also believes that the government needs to “encourage its agencies to place R&D contracts with start-ups and small businesses.”
