A study co-authored by the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance found that 80 per cent of lending to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) was provided by four UK banks. More than half of SMEs in the study said they didn’t know about alternative finance. Experts warn that lack of knowledge about funding for SMEs could “fuel a £20bn black hole in the UK economy by 2020.”
