The Guardian: Pedal power: how bicycles are changing what it means to be a girl in India

 

Rachita Vora, Manager of Dasra Girl Alliance and Cambridge MBA 2011 alumna, writes on a new initiative that gives free bicycles to girls in Bihar state. The scheme helped to boost secondary school enrolment among adolescent girls and also changed the status of a girl in the society. “Solving India’s problems around poverty, malnutrition or education will only succeed in the long run if we focus our efforts on changing the narrative around what it means to be male or female in our country. With ever-increasing global and Indian examples of programmes that do this, we are at the beginning of a rising tide.”
