Dr Garrick Hileman, Research Fellow at Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF), based at Cambridge Judge Business School, comments on digital alternative currency: “Bitcoin is created by open-source community but it doesn’t have legal tender status like the pound or dollar do. There are more than 600 currencies now in the world, but not all of them are widely accepted. The value of Bitcoin is rising – it has tripled the value in the last few months.”
