Japan introduced a corporate governance code in 2015, but critics say more needs to be done. Dr John Buchanan, Research Associate at the Centre for Business Research, Cambridge Judge Business School, says although implementation of corporate governance at larger corporations seems to be progressing, it’s still fallible. Commenting on the Nissan-Renault case, Dr Buchanan said: “Despite Nissan’s claim that it ‘has established a corporate governance system that maintains business transparency’ it appears to have deferred to those in power and allowed its chairman to misreport earnings and arrogate resources.”
