Wired: Everything and nothing is a tech company now

 

Raghu Rau, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild Professor of Finance at Cambridge Judge, comments on how over the past decade many firms have become a “tech company” in one way or another. “In these new industries with the potential for enormous returns, nobody knows exactly what these companies are, and everybody has this fear of missing out,” Professor Rau says. In 2004 he co-authored a study that looked at companies that stripped “.com” from their names in 1998-1999 only to see their stock prices suffer.
