Dr David Stillwell, Deputy Director of the Psychometrics Centre and Lecturer in Big Data Analytics, Cambridge Judge Business School
Roughly 18 per cent of companies currently use psychometric tests in the hiring process, and even more organisations use them as part of staff development. Many of you will have taken a Belbin Team Roles Inventory, will know your MBTI Type, or will have completed the Thomas International Personal Profile Analysis (PPA). The stakes can be high: the cost of a bad hire is estimated to be at least one year’s pay, and the promise of psychometric tests used properly is that they can select the right person for the right role.
In this Business Briefing Dr David Stillwell, Deputy Director of the Psychometrics Centre and Lecturer in Big Data Analytics at Cambridge Judge Business School, will provide an overview of what makes a good psychometric test, and how to deploy them most effectively in an organisation. He will also explain the difference between tests most appropriate for personal development, versus tests appropriate for high stakes selection. Finally, David will present some of the latest research on advanced tests that promise to be more accurate, shorter, or more fun to take.
Speaker bio
Dr David Stillwell is Deputy Director of the School’s Psychometrics Centre.
In June 2007, between obtaining his first degree and embarking on his Masters, David began a personal side project designing applications for social networks. The result was the myPersonality Facebook application that allows users to take real psychometric tests and receive feedback on their results. Today myPersonality has collected data from more than six million people and the resulting database has become a priceless academic resource used by numerous researchers all over the world.
Since these early successes, the influence of David’s work has expanded considerably, so that today its impact ranges from targeted online advertising, psychometric adaptive test development, ipsative techniques in test design, the real-time analysis of online digital footprints, behavioural prediction and state-of-the-art school examinations.
