Professor John Miles, Director of Research in Transitional Energy Strategies, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge

Speaker bio

John Miles is a Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge and is the Arup/Royal Academy of Engineering Professor of Transitional Energy Strategies at the University’s Department of Engineering.

Professor Miles’ research interests span a wide range of applications within the spectrum of energy strategy. He is particularly interested in the challenges of low carbon transport and low carbon power generation/distribution. He is currently engaged in research in the areas of electric vehicles, low-cost solar power systems for developing countries, and grid-scale energy storage systems.

Previous to taking up his position at Cambridge, John was a Group Board Director at Arup, the global consultancy, for 17 years. During that time, he was responsible for a number of high-profile projects and developments. He has very wide experience in the fields of energy and resources and has particular expertise in the areas of energy strategy and low-carbon transport systems. As a senior member of the firm, Prof. Miles was a media spokesman on subjects ranging from Peak Oil to Intelligent Mobility, and he actively contributed to the debate on carbon reduction and global warming.
