Join our Economics and Policy seminar

Speaker: Professor Luis Garicano, London School of Economics and Political Science

Outside area of the Business School.

About the seminar topic

Luis Garicano will be discussing his latest book, Messy Jobs: The Work That AI Cannot Reach (2026), co-authored with Jin Li and Yanhui Wu.

All knowledge work varies along the same dimension: messiness. On one end, there is one defined task to execute — you get the payslips via email, use rules to fill out a form, and get a result. On the other end, there is a wide bundle of complex tasks: running a factory or a family involves work that is very hard to specify in advance and is full of conflict. Along the messiness spectrum, AI has a different ability to help or replace humans. While it is easy for AI to replace simple, clean tasks, it is hard for it to replace messy jobs.

Ahead of this, Luis will be presenting his paper Weak Bundle, Strong Bundle: How AI Redraws Job Boundaries. Visit the Cambridge Judge event page to find out more and register.

Speaker bio

Luis Garicano is Professor of Public Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). His research examines the organisation of knowledge, talent and specialisation, and their impact on productivity and economic growth, with a particular focus on how artificial intelligence is transforming the economics of work.

Alongside his academic research, Luis has made significant contributions to public policy and European economic governance. He returned to academia in 2022 after serving as a Member of the European Parliament, where he was Vice-President of the Renew Europe group responsible for economic affairs.

Before entering politics, Luis held academic appointments at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and LSE. He is also co-founder of Silicon Continent, a platform exploring innovation, technology, AI and policy in Europe.
