Speaker: Dr Hiroki Shin, University of Birmingham

Dr Hiroki Shin is a historian of energy, the environment and modern economic systems, whose research spans the 18th century to the present. His work explores the historical evolution of energy regimes and the ways in which energy-intensive societies have shaped culture, everyday life and the natural environment across the Global South and Global North. He has held research and teaching positions at several leading UK universities and is currently involved in interdisciplinary research on global supply chains and climate change. He is preparing a book manuscript for Cambridge University Press on the role of historical knowledge in contemporary energy debates. He also serves as a general editor of the Critical Energy Studies monograph series, published by MIT Press.
