Cambridge Judge Business School and Barclays Bank have established the first executive education academy in excellence in compliance. The vision of the Academy is to reframe the understanding and expectations of compliance to create a professional practice which encompasses both technical and behavioural aspects leading to significant cultural change in the way that the financial industry is run, and the creation of value and excellence across the sector.

In a potential world-first academic and industry collaboration, the focus is on a values and judgement-based approach to compliance, leading thinking and creating understanding around the emerging regulatory regimes which are being developed around the world.

The Cambridge-Barclays Compliance Career Academy is the first programme to be established under Cambridge Judge Business School’s Centre for Compliance and Trust. Working with banks and other institutions to develop practices and behaviours which put customers and values at the heart of decision-making, the Centre for Compliance and Trust will lead the development of knowledge around appropriate and responsible business practices which respond to both the evolving regulatory environment and customer demands.

Chairman of the Centre and KPMG Professor Emeritus of Management Studies, Professor Dame Sandra Dawson said:

Working together, Barclays and Cambridge Judge Business School have created a programme that is world-leading and will take compliance to a new level.

“Cambridge Judge Business School will offer excellence in research and education to support Barclays and the industry more widely to work towards a future where excellence in compliance is seen as a foundation of good business.”

Sir David Walker, Barclays Chairman, said strong and effective internal compliance was essential to ensuring banks operate in the right way:
“For the first time, the Compliance Career Academy sets a benchmark for compliance practitioners that I am confident will contribute to raising standards across the industry as a whole”.
Mike Roemer, Barclays Group Head of Compliance, added:

“At Barclays the Compliance function is currently undergoing a wide programme of change to position it as we strive to be the gold standard for the industry. A key element of this is offering the opportunity for continuous professional development to employees around the world at every stage of their career.”

We undertook extensive research seeking a partner to deliver such a specialist programme on a global scale and were delighted to appoint Cambridge Judge Business School. Their position as one of the world’s foremost teaching and research universities uniquely positions us to better support both our colleagues and our customers and clients achieve their ambitions in the right way.

The Cambridge-Barclays Compliance Career Academy offers eight modules in total, delivered in a number of international locations including Cambridge, New York, Singapore and Johannesburg. Modules covered include topics such as The Global Financial System, Understanding the Regulatory Environment and Conflict of Interest amongst others. All Module Directors are faculty of Cambridge Judge Business School.
