Description of the programme

21 June 2010

On 21 June, Dr Mashelkar met with faculty and students at Cambridge Judge Business School and the rest of the University. He took great pleasure in visiting the Cavendish Laboratory, where he met with fellow scientist Professor Peter Littlewood.

On the evening of 21 June, he delivered the inaugural BP Lecture titled Indian Science, Technology & Innovation: The Changing Landscape at Cambridge Judge Business School.

The event was launched by Professor Arnoud De Meyer, the Director of Cambridge Judge Business School, followed by welcome remarks by David Eyton, Head of Research and Technology at BP. Professor Lynn Gladden, pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, formally introduced Dr R A Mashelkar to the audience.

Dr Mashelkar then gave a superb presentation on India’s potential to drive ‘inclusive innovation’ which is fuelled by the ability of Indian entrepreneurs and corporations to create innovative solutions that deliver more value for more people at less cost and using fewer natural resources.

Dr Mashelkar calls this frugal and sustainable innovation philosophy “More with Less for More”. Dr Mashelkar had the audience in rapture as it listened to his engaging talk. After his lecture, Dr Mashelkar patiently addressed many insightful questions from the audience.

After his lecture, Dr Mashelkar attended a special dinner in his honour at Downing College. One of the guests of honour was Professor Venki Ramakrishnan, winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

22 June 2010

The following day, 22 June, Dr Mashelkar had meetings with senior administrators of the University of Cambridge in order to discuss different aspects of the special partnership that Cambridge is seeking to forge with India.

That afternoon he left for London to attend the celebration of the 350th anniversary of the Royal Society, of which he is a Fellow. We were honoured to have been able to host Dr Mashelkar at Cambridge Judge Business School. He is a true inspiration for current and future generations of academic and corporate leaders!
