Gain insights into the International Business Study Trip. From strategy sessions to street food, the Global EMBA cohort’s week in Bangkok blended academic rigour with real-world insight. Students tackled globalisation challenges, met industry leaders, explored Thailand’s innovation scene and soaked up the country’s rich culture – all in one unforgettable study trip.

International Business is one of the core courses on the Executive MBA programmes. It takes place in the form of the week-long International Business Study Trip (IBST), with all lectures for the course delivered during the overseas trip. The IBST covers strategies for internationalising business, including why and how firms internationalise and the role of innovation clusters. The class meets established local business leaders and visits leading domestic and international organisations to understand varied responses to globalisation.

In October 2025, our Global Executive MBA (Global EMBA) 2025 cohort travelled to Bangkok, Thailand for their 7-day IBST.

Academic sessions and team projects

Over the course of the week, students participated in 14.5 hours of engaging lectures, debates and discussions led by faculty members Michael Kitson, Associate Professor in International Macroeconomics, Madeleine Rauch, Associate Professor in Strategy and International Business, and Lidia Mishchenko, Teaching Associate at Cambridge Judge. Topics ranged from understanding globalisation to exploring the influence of formal and informal institutions on business strategies across borders.

A highlight of the trip was the team-based project, where students investigated the institutional distance between Thailand (the home country) and various host countries including Ecuador, Guatemala, India, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Each team applied theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios, crafting informed recommendations for the internationalisation strategy of a firm of their choice. The presentations on the final day showcased insightful strategies and critical reflections, making for an engaging and thought-provoking session.

Exploring some of Thailand’s leading companies

The company visits began with CP Group, Thailand’s largest private company. Founded in 1921, this global powerhouse operates in 21 countries across industries such as agribusiness, retail, telecommunications, real estate and finance. The visit provided invaluable insights into CP Group’s ambitious international expansion and innovative market strategies.

Next, the students visited Bosch Thailand to explore global strategy within a multinational corporation. Discussions focused on business strategy, international operations, logistics and branding, including the ‘Move Like a Bosch’ campaign. Operating in Thailand since 1923, Bosch is active across mobility solutions, industrial technology, consumer goods and energy and building technology. With manufacturing plants, an R&D centre and nearly 1,500 employees, Bosch Thailand is a regional leader in smart manufacturing, digital transformation and sustainability, adapting global innovations to Southeast Asian markets while fostering local talent.

Students also visited ThaiBev, one of Southeast Asia’s largest beverage companies, known for its diverse portfolio, including iconic brands such as Chang Beer and SangSom. Founded in 2003, ThaiBev has achieved significant growth through strategic acquisitions and a strong focus on sustainability and innovation. The visit offered valuable insights into the company’s leadership approach, sustainability initiatives and strategies for driving innovation in the beverage industry.

The final company visit was to IBM Thailand’s headquarters, where students explored cutting-edge technologies such as AI and design-thinking principles. Established in 1952, IBM Thailand plays a key role in driving the nation’s digital transformation and innovation, collaborating with public and private sectors to modernise systems and support sustainable growth through advanced technology solutions.

Networking and thought leadership

The evening programme was a rich blend of insightful talks, engaging discussions and networking opportunities. Highlights included speaker Werapong Art Prapha (Cambridge EMBA 2022), Trade Representative of the Royal Thai Government, who shared insights on Thailand’s challenges and opportunities. A networking reception with alumni and guests provided a platform for meaningful connections, followed by a thought-provoking panel session on doing business in Thailand. Another highlight was a guest talk by Piyachart (Arm) Isarabhakdee, CEO of BRANDi and Companies at the Supatra River House, where participants enjoyed riverside elegance alongside award-winning Thai cuisine. The programme concluded with a fireside chat with Nageen Qasim (Global EMBA 2025) and Calvin Liew (Cambridge MBA 2023), who discussed their journeys and experiences on the Executive MBA and MBA programmes.

Unveiling Bangkok’s entrepreneurial spirit at the Innovation Forum

The group also participated in the traditional Innovation Forum, connecting with 6 entrepreneurs from Bangkok’s innovation ecosystem. These dynamic individuals shared their journeys and highlighted the strengths and challenges of the local innovation landscape. From tech holding companies to cleantech innovators and edtech leaders, the forum offered a glimpse into Bangkok’s thriving entrepreneurial spirit.

Cultural highlights: a taste of Thailand’s traditions

The cultural programme included vibrant experiences, such as watching Muay Thai fighters, taking part in a hands-on Thai cooking class and enjoying a dinner cruise with stunning views of Bangkok’s iconic landmarks. Students also explored the Grand Palace, including Wat Phra Kaew (home to the revered Emerald Buddha) and Wat Pho, famous for its Reclining Buddha and as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. These activities provided a rich immersion in Thailand’s heritage and traditions.
