The article, co-authored by Grischa Perino and Arthur van Benthem, was published in the October 2025 issue of The Economic Journal.
We hope our research can serve as a useful real-time input for policymakers globally as they develop climate policy portfolios.
Dr Ritz said: “I am thrilled to have been awarded the Royal Economic Society Prize. ‘Overlapping Climate Policies’ gives policymakers and researchers a framework to estimate how climate policies like renewable subsidies or fossil phase-outs interact with a carbon price. Thank you to my co-authors Grischa Perino and Arthur van Benthem for many years of work. We hope our research can serve as a useful real-time input for policymakers globally as they develop climate policy portfolios.”
Transforming research into real‑world climate strategy
Originally developed as EPRG Working Paper 2034 in 2020, the research has evolved into a widely recognised contribution to climate policy design. It offers policymakers a valuable framework for navigating increasingly complex policy mixes in the transition to net zero.
The RES Prize Committee was struck by the relevance of the analysis, which provides a powerful tool for policymakers to gauge climate effectiveness.
The Royal Economic Society said: “The RES Prize Committee was struck by the relevance of the analysis, which provides a powerful tool for policymakers to gauge climate effectiveness. The analysis creatively demonstrates how certain demand-side policies can be complementary while other interventions may inadvertently backfire, effectively opening vital new research questions for the design of global climate portfolios.”
The winners will receive the Prize at the annual Royal Economic Society Conference, taking place this year at Newcastle University.
