The Profiteers, the latest book by Christopher Marquis, Sinyi Professor of Chinese Management at Cambridge Judge Business School, was today (16 June) named to the 2025 Best New Management Booklist by management group Thinkers50, which seeks to identify and share leading management ideas.
The book published in May 2024 by the PublicAffairs imprint of Hachette Book Group details, as its subtitle says, “How business privatizes profits and socializes costs” through passing along big costs to citizens. The book argues that corporations enjoy a ‘free lunch’ at the expense of taxpayers that results in environmental damage, systemic discrimination and low wages.
Criteria for Thinkers50 booklist: relevance, rigour and readability
The 10 books on the Thinkers50 list were selected based on nominations and opinions from the Thinkers50 community of business thinkers and practicing managers. The criteria for the list are relevance in addressing a current issue or challenge, rigour in research including real-world examples, and readability in terms of insight, inspiration and accessibility.
“The books we select each year represent more than trends – they reflect a shift in how we understand leadership, organisational culture and decision-making in a changing world,” says Stuart Crainer, Thinkers50 co-founder. “They challenge assumptions and inspire new ways of managing and leading with purpose and clarity.”
Adds Thinkers50 co-founder Des Dearlove: “These books offer research-based insights into the evolving nature of business. They open doors to new ways of thinking about management, purpose and performance.”

List also honours book on immigrant entrepreneurs written by Cambridge Judge PhD alumna
The Thinkers50 Best New Management Booklist for 2025 also includes ‘Pioneers – 8 Principles of Business Longevity from Immigrant Entrepreneurs’, a book written by a PhD graduate of Cambridge Judge, Neri Karra Sillaman (PhD 2005), founder of luxury fashion brand Neri Karra. The book, which examines such well-known businesses as Chobani, WhatsApp and BioNTech, looks at strategies for building businesses that embrace inclusion, how to leverage the power of community, and techniques for turning past failure into future success.
