We spoke to the new Director of the Master of Finance (MFin), Dr Othman Cole about his new appointment and what vision he has for the MFin programme.

Introducing the new Director of the MFin programme

Dr Othman Cole has stepped into the role of Director of the Master of Finance (MFin) programme with a clear vision and deep commitment to shaping the future of finance education. Having been closely involved with the programme for many years, his appointment marks a natural progression in his academic and professional journey. Dr Cole brings a strategic focus to curriculum development, industry engagement and student mentorship, ensuring the MFin continues to deliver a world-class educational experience.

Academic and industry expertise

Dr Cole holds a PhD and MPhil in Finance from the University of Cambridge, where his research explored energy economics and the resource curse in developing markets. His academic work is complemented by extensive professional experience in investment banking and consulting, where he worked on complex financial transactions and strategic projects. This dual perspective enables him to bridge academic rigour with practical insight, enriching the learning experience for MFin students.

Vision for the programme

Under Dr Cole’s leadership, the MFin programme is poised to evolve in response to the dynamic financial landscape. He aims to integrate emerging topics such as fintech, sustainable finance and data analytics into the curriculum, while maintaining a strong foundation in core finance principles. His vision includes strengthening ties with industry partners and alumni to provide students with real-world exposure and career opportunities. Dr Cole is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that empowers students to become ethical and forward-thinking finance professionals.

Ultimately, my role as MFin Director is to inspire and empower students, ensuring they graduate as confident, skilled professionals ready to make meaningful contributions to the finance industry.

Bridging theory and practice

A key priority for Dr Cole is ensuring that academic theory is closely aligned with real-world relevance. Drawing on his industry background, he incorporates practical case studies and decision-making scenarios into the classroom. Topics such as behavioural finance, capital structure and project finance are taught with an emphasis on their application in global markets. Through guest lectures, workshops and alumni engagement, students gain insights into the challenges and innovations shaping the finance sector.

I have always been passionate about bridging the gap between rigorous academic theory and real-world applications. Finance is a dynamic field and I believe that the most impactful learning occurs when students can connect theoretical frameworks to the practical challenges they will face in their careers.

Championing sustainability and global impact

Dr Cole’s research and teaching increasingly focus on sustainability and financial inclusion. He advocates for the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into financial decision-making and capital allocation. By exploring tools such as green finance, impact investing and sustainability-linked instruments, he encourages students to consider finance as a means to address global challenges like climate change and inequality. His global perspective, shaped by work in emerging markets, adds depth to discussions on responsible finance and development.

I plan to work closely with faculty members to design and update the curriculum, ensuring it remains cutting-edge and aligned with the evolving demands of the financial industry. This includes integrating emerging topics such as fintech, sustainable finance and data analytics while maintaining a strong foundation in core finance principles.
