Dr Andrew Coburn, Centre for Risk Studies: Understanding the risk of financial catastrophe

At the Centre for Risk Studies’ 4th Annual Meeting, leaders and decision makers from business, government, inter-governmental organisations, academia and NGOs explored the links between risk and strategy.

Challenging the customary perception that risk is the threat of loss with predominantly negative undertones, the annual conference encouraged broader discussion about opportunities that emerge in a risky environment.

A new research track is targeting the understanding of financial catastrophe risk. The aim is to avoid the severity of impact experienced in the five or six years since the last crisis. Dr Andrew Coburn, Director of the External Advisory Board for the Centre for Risk Studies and a Fellow of Cambridge Judge Business School, explains.
