Before the Cambridge Master of Finance (MFin)

Finance seemed like a vast and unnavigable sea when I first graduated from my undergraduate in Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE – majoring in Economics) from the University of Amsterdam. There were so many different areas of finance, it was hard to pinpoint which part of the industry would suit me and my skillset. It was only when I went abroad for my exchange at the National University of Singapore (NUS) where I was introduced to a cohort of students from different walks of life, different degrees and nationalities with their own experiences, that I was given first-hand experience and guidance and what it actually means to work in finance and which areas may suit my skillset and personality. It was quickly clear that with my love for negotiation, debate and complex problem solving the trading floor was my calling.

After my undergraduate I joined UBS Investment Bank as a salesperson on the trading floor, marketing rates derivatives and structured products to a Dutch, Austrian and Swiss (DACH) client base. During my time there, I learned how to juggle opposing interests between my clients and my traders, whilst quickly understanding and dissecting complex derivatives. My learning curve was steep, but my dedication was strong, culminating in a promotion to Analyst one year ahead of the rest of my graduate cohort.

Why the MFin and why Cambridge?

After 3 years on the trading floor, I thought back to what made me join this exciting new industry in the first place. I thoroughly enjoyed my job but before getting too deep in, I wanted to take a step back and get a feeling for other areas in the industry to either consolidate my choice for the trading floor or give me the chance to pursue a new avenue whilst I was still young. When looking at what I most valued when making my decision back in my undergraduate, I realised it was the exchange with experienced students from many different backgrounds that allowed me to really grow my ambitions and make an informed decision. As one of the few post-experience only masters at an institution with a reputation such as that of the University of Cambridge, it was my first choice.

What I am hoping to achieve this year and how it will contribute towards my post-MFin career

The Master of Finance (MFin) not only allows me to deepen my technical and quantitative skills but also provides me with a stimulating and diverse environment to learn from my fellow experienced student cohort. Especially the first-hand industry exposure through the City Speakers series was particularly appealing to me, as it gave me insights into different walks of the industry from respected and experienced individuals.

My thoughts and feelings on being awarded an MFin scholarship

With the help of the MFin Merit Scholarship, I am able to fully immerse myself in the offerings of the programme. Knowing that I have the support of such a respected institution as Cambridge Judge Business School, I am able to confidently explore different areas of finance still unfamiliar to me, allowing me to grow my skillset and knowledge beyond that of most people in the industry. I am very grateful and extend my thanks to the Business School.
