Overview

The Experimental Lab Manager can provide advice on running online experiments. Contact the Experimental Lab Manager at [email protected] to discuss resources for creating simple surveys or more complex experiments that allow group interaction.

The physical lab is equipped with 21 computers and allows for standalone and networked experiments. These experiments can be complemented by the use of additional lab equipment outlined below. Further arrangements can be made to run studies involving personal interactions or team work. Employing the lab equipment, researchers can also run studies offsite.

Lab equipment

At the moment, the lab offers the following equipment:

  • Empatica E4 wristband
The lab is equipped with six Empatica E4 wristbands. These can detect physical responses like heart rate, heart rate variability and galvanic skin response. The participant can either be assessed while sitting in the lab or can take the wristband home to wear for an extended period of time.
  • iMotions Affectiva
iMotions Affectiva is a facial recognition software. Through facial coding, it can detect seven core emotions: joy, anger, fear, disgust, contempt, sadness, and surprise. It can further measure participants’ attention and engagement. All that the researcher needs is a video recording of the participant’s face (recorded in the lab or with the subject’s personal webcam at home), which is then fed into the iMotions software.
  • Tobii Pro Fusion eye tracker
Tobii Pro Fusion is a next generation, compact high-performance eye tracker with a sampling frequency of 250 Hz, two eye tracking cameras, and two pupil tracking modes (bright and dark pupil). Using the iMotions screen-based eye tracking module, advanced analysis of visual attention metrics such as heatmaps, gaze replays, areas of interest (AOI), time to first fixation, saccades, and oculomotor events can be visualised and exported. The software can synchronise eye-tracking data with other iMotions biosensor modules, including Affectiva’s facial expression analysis.
  • z-Tree
z-Tree (Zurich Toolbox for Readymade Economic Experiments) is an open source experiment builder for behavioural economic sciences. Through simple programming one can build auction games or business simulations. It also allows for more complex programming through coding.
