Ground-breaking programme to address gender imbalance in law firms

University of Cambridge Judge Business School launches Europe’s first Women in Law Leadership Programme.

The University of Cambridge Judge Business School today announces the launch of its Women in Law Leadership open programme, the first open education programme in Europe to address the challenges faced by women as law firm partners.

The programme has been created in response to demand in an industry increasingly appealing to women as a career choice. Law Society figures show that in recent years more women than men have been qualifying as solicitors.

In addition, many law firms have publicly declared their aim to increase the percentage of women on their Executive Committee and International Board. Linklaters has pledged to boost female membership on its Executive Committee and International Board by 2018. They have also pledged 30 per cent female partners at the next round of promotions in 2015. Many other firms believe that their ability to retain more women in partner and other leadership roles is essential to their future success. The new Cambridge Judge programme is designed to help them in this quest.

The programme, created by the School’s Executive Education business, has been designed specifically for female law firm partners keen to learn insights, skills and techniques that will help them thrive in their roles. The programme will be delivered by leading business academics from the University of Cambridge and experts in the legal sector.

Programme Director, Fiona Rice, a former Linklaters banking partner, commented:

This Women in Law Leadership Programme has come about in response to what we are hearing from law firms – that there is a pressing need to focus on the development of key female talent at partner level as well as to provide a forum to focus on the challenges they face as women in that role. The programme will provide the time, space and inspiration for participants to develop additional important leadership competencies, as well as examine their own roles as leaders and mentors for the next generation.

The Women in Law Leadership Programme is part of a specialist suite of Professional Service Firm programmes offered by Cambridge Judge Business School. The suite also includes the Law Firm Partner as Leader and the Professional Service Firm Leader programmes, along with customised programmes for firms.
