Programme: MPhil Management 2019

Country: Spain

Company: Revolut, Uncapped

“The cohort is very smart, supportive, and humble coming from many different countries and educational backgrounds. Due to a smaller class size of 40-50, I got to know other students and professors quite well, many of whom I am still in touch with.

“The diversity of people inside and outside the class and college means more exposure from various degree programmes. The Cambridge experience (the College system, the beautiful Cambridge Judge Business School, the awesome community of students, professors, and alumni) was the killer feature of this MPhil in Management programme at the University of Cambridge.”

Biography
Finn is a first generation university student from his family who migrated from China to Spain. Finn graduated top of his class from the BSc Artificial Intelligence programme at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. The programme hosts a great diversity of students, from different backgrounds and nationalities that will definitely shape you as a person and as a professional for the rest of your life. The course is stimulating and comprises in-class discussions with top-class professors and students that kept me engaged till my last day. Every day, either in class or within the Business School, there are plenty of opportunities to grow and learn about the topics that most intrigue you. I have personally been able to learn about the consulting industry by participating in dedicated events and meeting people with strong experience in the field. In addition, the material covered in class was always up-to-date as lecturers are leaders in their respective fields and work, on a daily basis, using the concepts that they teach. The course has helped me integrate my technical engineering background with a strong business sense. This has allowed me to create a complete, well-rounded, and solid profile needed to thrive as a strategy consultant. Yet, I am sure that the widely applicable management skills and knowledge gained throughout the course will help me thrive in many other roles, should I wish to change my career plans.

“The programme has truly been an intellectually stimulating and rewarding experience. I was really impressed with how well the course modules are woven together, offering a comprehensive overview of business and management theories. It is very clear that the programme was carefully designed, from foundation to consolidation to implementation, as each module’s weekly content supported and complemented one another, helping to bring to life the conceptual issues covered. This programme’s breadth and depth has not only helped me develop a solid understanding of various aspects of business, but also provided a fresh perspective by which to view the business world. The lecturers are not only experts in their fields, but are truly passionate about the topics that they cover, which makes such a difference. I was especially impressed with the range of high-profile guest speakers, each offering insights into a myriad of business areas.

“What made the programme so special was not only the highly co-ordinated content, but also the diversity of its students. I was surrounded by a global class of ambitious and bright students from a variety of academic and cultural backgrounds. This diversity not only sparks stimulating discussions but also made team projects particularly insightful and enjoyable. I left Cambridge with a network reaching further around the globe than I could have expected.

“While Cambridge Judge Business School is challenging, there is a good level of support that helps guide you through the programme. The Management Consulting Project is an invaluable experience as it offered me the chance to consolidate my team working and project management skills while simultaneously gaining client exposure with a high-profile company at an early stage in my career. It was so rewarding to be able to implement everything learnt throughout the programme and actually put the theories studied into practice with a hands-on project tackling real business problems.

“Overall, I found my year at Cambridge Judge to be a great investment that I would not hesitate to recommend given the personal and professional development that I gained during this time.”

“If I had to choose one reason why the programme is so great, it would be the diversity of students, lecturers and admin staff who make up the programme. Between them they share a wealth of experience and a willingness to engage, which was evident during lectures where questions often resulted in new insights or class debate.”

Company: Medical Doctor, NHS

“I believe every doctor should have the opportunity to learn fundamental business and management skills. Whether you train to be a hospital consultant, a general practitioner (GP) or go into allied fields, management skills help empower doctors to try and make positive changes within the National Health Service (NHS) and to wider society. This was my primary motivation for applying to this programme, and having recently graduated and returned to clinical medicine, I can safely say it was one of the best decisions I made.

“This programme provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of business and management theory. Lessons learned in class are applicable across a diverse range of industries, making the programme highly appropriate for students looking to become leaders in their chosen field. The MPhil provided me with the tools to analyse and frame business and management problems, as well as consider ways in which organisations can improve. In this way, it has given me a different lens through which to analyse and reflect upon my experiences and observations working in a health service that is facing major challenges.

“If I had to choose one reason why the programme is so great, it would be the diversity of students, lecturers and admin staff who make up the programme. Between them they share a wealth of experience and a willingness to engage, which was evident during lectures where questions often resulted in new insights or class debate. Some of my favourite modules included Organisational Analysis, Strategy, Operations Management and Business Innovation, which were fun and thought-provoking. The Consulting Project was a particular highlight and I was fortunate to be teamed with four good friends from my programme. Together we formed a cohesive, high-performing team tackling a strategy problem for our client, a major brand and leader in their field. Being client-focused was an important element in helping us to build a trusting relationship with our client. By doing this, we were able to get to the root of the problem and develop innovative yet actionable recommendations for them to implement. After our final presentation, we were awarded first place for the best consulting team in our class, which was a very proud moment.

“Outside of the MPhil, I have made great friends and formed a strong bond with the Business School, my College and the wider University. Cambridge is a beautiful city. It’s small but vibrant, and there are endless activities to choose from. During my year, I played for the University Blues and College netball teams, rowed for my College in Bumps and went to a variety of social events, talks and performances. It was also fun to visit different Colleges, which all have a unique ‘feel’ and personality. I would never have thought hospital night shifts would have prepared me for May Ball Week but it helped me ‘survive’ three balls in a row (Trinity, St John’s, Magdalene) and a final one (Wolfson) at the end of the week – I challenge you to do more!

“Overall, Cambridge has truly been a life-changing experience. The knowledge and skills gained on this programme will carry through to the rest of my career. I would encourage anyone who is interested in this programme to apply.”
