Idea

Watipa is a social enterprise working to enable equal societies, just development, and equal health for all.

Drawing on decades of experience in national and international development, Watipa provides ethical consultancy services in public health, human rights, democracy, sustainable development and inclusive social change to a variety of government, non-government and private sector clients. Profits support a youth development programme that provides scholarships and mentorship opportunities to young leaders in developing countries. Watipa was registered on 11 June 2016 as a Community Interest Company (CIC) and on 25 May 2017 as a Registered Charity in England and Wales.

Watipa is named after a friend in the north of Malawi, an eight year old girl called Watipa, who embodies courage, determination and hope for a better, just and more equal future. In her local language, Tumbuka, Watipa means “has been provided for.”

People

Watipa was founded by Lucy Stackpool-Moore, an Australian and British citizen who is passionate about people and community development. Lucy has more than 15 years’ experience working in international development, and draws on experience in programs, research and teaching about HIV, human rights and participatory social change.

Watipa is built on the insights and commitment of nine inspirational women in Malawi, South Africa, Australia, the United Kingdom and Lebanon. They are guided by an equally diverse and visionary Board of Trustees and Advisory Group.

Watipa provides a platform that brings together diverse and passionate professionals. In working together, providing inter-disciplinary solutions to development concerns, we are much more than the sum of our parts.

Impact

Watipa aspires to be the change we want to see in the world, and to ‘walk the talk’ of the ethical and community driven approaches to community development that form the core of their work. Young people guide the governance of Watipa, as decision makers and colleagues informing their approach.
