EnterpriseTECH Postgraduate

EnterpriseTECH postgraduate.

EnterpriseTECH Postgraduate offers a real-world learning experience at the interface of research and the start-up world. It is designed to inspire researchers to explore their own entrepreneurial potential. It is open to masters and PhD students, postdocs and research-facing staff as an extra-curricular activity and similarly experienced industry professionals.

The programme provides a foundational perspective on innovative and entrepreneurial practices. You will have many opportunities to develop valuable subject-related skills with our blend of intensive lectures and workshops plus practical application to a project. The projects come from the Cambridge cluster with an emphasis on the physical, life and medical sciences as well as engineering and technology.

The challenge for mixed-discipline student teams is to determine whether this new technology has commercial potential and, if so, what that route to market looks like. After the intensive lectures and with guidance from your business supervisor, your team produces three pieces of work:

  • 3,000-word commercial feasibility report.
  • two-minute video infomercial.
  • five-minute team pitch to a live audience.

Teams receive detailed written feedback and grades from their inventors, programme supervisors and assessors. On successful completion a Certificate of Completion is awarded. Please note EnterpriseTECH Postgraduate is not credit bearing.

We run the postgraduate programme twice a year with each cohort having around 70 participants in teams of five to six. You can read more about the projects, lectures and supervisions in the programme overview and see photographs in our gallery.

At the heart of EnterpriseTECH is effective teamwork and you will learn about:

  • ideas and opportunities - how to spot opportunities, developing new ways to feed creativity and vision, learning how to value ideas, approaches for ethical and sustainable thinking
  • resources - understanding how to mobilise resources and others around you, financial and economic literacy, self-awareness and self-efficacy, motivation and perseverance
  • action - experiential learning, working with others, planning and management, leadership development, coping with ambiguity, uncertainty and risk.

COVID-19

Ensuring student wellbeing and complying with recommended physical distancing measures is a priority for us. We will adhere to the University of Cambridge’s policies. However, we hope to run as much of EnterpriseTECH STAR as possible in its usual in-person form. There are many benefits to small group interactions.

Time commitment

The programme runs for about 12 weeks and demands 100-hours of commitment.

  • Launch night for students, inventors and team supervisors (five hours).
  • Lecture intensive and team-building workshops (35 hours).
  • Three evening supervisions (10 hours).
  • Team meeting, online research and assessment preparation (50 hours).

Student backgrounds and vocational relevance

The typical applicant is a lab-based researcher curious about exploring what career opportunities there are in entrepreneurship, how to access them and growing their own professional network. Most of our students come from the physical sciences, clinical medicine, engineering, biotechnology and life sciences research backgrounds.

In the past two-years, 262 (110 female, 152 male) researchers have attended the postgraduate programme. Students have an understanding but limited experience of entrepreneurship and attending a business school programme is often a new experience.

EnterpriseTECH Postgraduate is relevant if you are considering an entrepreneurial career, either by setting up or becoming part of a commercial or social venture. It will also be useful if you want to; work with with innovators and entrepreneurs, be in an innovative and entrepreneurial role in a larger organisation, or take up further study in a business school environment.

Undoubtedly, this is one of the most enlightening and empowering programmes I’ve undertaken during my postgraduate studies. The mentorship, lecturers and beyond have been invaluable in teaching me about the vast opportunities available outside of the lab.
Hassan Imran, PhD student, Department of Engineering, EnterpriseTECH 2019-20.
EnterpriseTECH is a unique opportunity for PhD students and postdocs to experience the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurial thinking. Through a well-structured, yet flexible format, participants travel the often arduous path of taking an idea from concept to commercialisation as a team. The programme is an exhilarating experience that gets students into a different mindset, allowing them to be creative outside of a lab by challenging their discipline and analytical skillset in a new way.

My groups have been exceptionally intelligent, diverse and hungry; two from my last cohort now want to move on to the EnterpriseTECH STAR programme because they enjoyed the first programme so much. As a business supervisor, it’s been a real pleasure to work with some amazing talent and to watch a group grow from diverse individuals at inception to a well-honed, commercially focused team at completion.
Ron Neumunz, VP Stanford Angels of Great Britain, EnterpriseTECH team business supervisor.

EnterpriseTECH was way beyond my expectations! The journey from experts' presentations through teamwork and finally pitching your project is so much fun. It is the most concise and productive training on entrepreneurship I have ever attended.
