Professional history

Tim is a Director of Wates Group, one of the UK’s largest privately owned construction property services and development businesses – operating nationally with 3,500 employees and revenues of over £1.5bn.

He started his career at Cazenove & Co. in the City prior to joining the Wates Group where he has held a number of roles around finance and housing – culminating in Managing Director of Wates Developments and then Chairman of Wates Family Holdings. He is Chairman of the Wates Family Council – the Family Shareholder Forum – is a member of the Wates Group Remuneration and Nomination Committees and leads for the Family on Housing.

Tim is a Non-Executive Director of Tampopo (restaurants) and Pedder Property (estate agency). He is the proud holder of an MBA from Cambridge Judge Business School.

Society & charity work

Tim is a Trustee/Patron of various Wates Family charities (including the William Wates Memorial Trust), a Trustee Director of The Clink Charity (which reduces reoffending by training prisoners in catering and hospitality skills in fine dining restaurants in prisons and prison kitchens), a member of the Surrey Growth Board and a Deputy Lieutenant for Surrey. He is High Sheriff of Surrey in nomination for 2023/2024. He chaired the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (Croydon, Surrey, West Sussex and Brighton) from 2014-2020, was a Prime Minister’s UK Business Ambassador from 2012-2018 and was a state school Governor from 2005-2015.

Outside work, he likes to spend time with his family and his dogs, enjoys food and wine and plays a weekly game of indoor football.
